Happy Monday: I was just watching Say Yes, To The Dress on TV. Yes, I do watch this show, although I am not sure what that says about my taste level. It involves mostly young woman buying expensive dresses at Kleinfeld in NYC. I have even seen Kleinfeld. These dresses have a starting cost of at least $2,500 and many are $4,000-$10,000 or more when 50% wont stay together! Even worse, I get the feeling that most parents paying for these dresses arent oil sheiks or very rich. So what is going on? When young brides buy these dresses, it is actually symptomatic of why many Americans are deeply in debt, which is a MAJOR problem in this country.. They really dont understand the difference between a need and a want, which I discuss very thoroughly in my book, Achieve Financial Freedom: Big Time. A need is something essential that you must have. A want is to have a desire to possess but is not necessarily essential. Here are some examples: You might need a car,but buying a new Mercedes over that of a Chevy or Chrysler would be a want. You might need new shoes, but buying expensive designer shoes costing hundreds would be a want. The key to getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and reducing debt is to really focus on your needs and to try to meet things as inexpensively as possible. You might need new clothes, but will going to Nordstrom Rack do? By the way, even though I am a guy, and as my wife will tell you, probably a bit dense. I do understand a brides goal to look beautiful at her wedding and to look good for pictures that she will refer to throughout her life. However, I firmly believe that they dont need to shop at a high priced, exclusive place like Kleinfelds and spend thousands on an elaborate dress when she can look great in many fine dresses for under $1,200! Understanding these concepts and focusing on needs vs wants will enrich your life and make your whole life less taxing! Please share this post with friends since debt accumulation is a major epidemic in this country. Material derived from Achieve Financial Freedom: Big Time
