Happy National Bird Day! In celebration of the day and of our relationships with these feathered friends, we wanted to share an adoption story with you. Last year, Rocky, an Amazon, was surrendered to Nevins Farm. It quickly became apparent that Rocky had been extremely abused in the past. While Rocky was at Nevins, he would not interact with people, and would roll over and give up if anyone made sudden movements towards him. Clearly, he was going to need a patient and understanding owner as most visitors failed to consider him because of his fearfulness. But then a wonderful woman began to visit. At first she read to him and Rocky stayed in his corner, but with time he began to feel more comfortable and even looked at her. With that gesture of friendship, the woman adopted Rocky; taking him home to carefully and slowly continue to earn his trust and build a relationship with him over many months and at his pace. She never gave up on him. A year later, Rocky’s amazing personality has emerged. He has conversations with his new human family (who he enjoys sharing french fries with) – and LOVES to serenade them. Amazingly, his favorite song to sing, “Let It Go” is about moving forward in life. Perhaps we can all learn a lesson from Rocky. P.S. Make sure to visit us on weekends all month for information, workshops and more about birds. Learn more at mspca.org/nevins
