Happy New Year Abby fans! We hope you had a merry Xmas! Wednesday Abby turned 11! I was lucky enough to be able to take the day off and spend it with her! We started out our day early and went to her light treatment appointment. I’ve attached a picture of the booth she enters for the treatments. It’s basically a glorified tanning booth. We decided she was Austin powers getting cryogenically frozen. That’s the movie she just discovered and has now watched 200 times and can quote word for word. The skin treatments have been working great so far. Abbys Doctors sent us to the U of M for a third opinion and they are trying a new plan which includes starting to wean her off the steroids!!!! They also said they think it will be good for her to start going back to school even maybe half days after the flu season ends!!! That is such a great birthday gift! She has been so lonely and I know that will boost her spirits! They said the advantages it will have on her mental state outweigh the risk of infection so sometime in Feb or early March look out Sunpath elementary here comes ABBY!!! For lunch we hit the KFC buffet. That’s a big deal because it’s one of the things we like to do together but couldn’t for the last few years because of the germ risk. Abby hasn’t had an appetite lately so it doubled as a daddy tactic to help give her the desire to eat. I knew my plan worked when she looked up at me with gravy and grease dripping down her chin and a meatless chicken bone in each hand and said “I’m SO full but it’s SOOO good”! After lunch we cruised to the community center because Abby wanted to shoot some baskets. Abby didn’t quite have the strength to make it all the way to the hoop yet but she gave it her best! It made me so sad but so proud all at the same time. Abby spotted the indoor walking track and a sign that read 14 laps = 1 mile. She wanted to try to walk a whole mile. She has had very little energy lately so I knew it wouldn’t be easy but you guessed it she did all 14 laps even running parts of the time! She was so proud of herself and couldn’t wait to tell everyone! It’s nice to see her proud of herself. She is such a brave and strong girl and I know she doesn’t understand just how proud of herself she should be. I think Abby feels like unless she picks the challenge or goal put in front of her then she feels she is “just doing what she has to do” and doesn’t think anything about it or give herself the credit she truly deserves! We chatted the whole time and counted down all 14 laps. We ended the day at home with a taco bar party and ice-cream cake with some of her favorite people. It was a great day. Some days I catch myself focusing on all the painful and difficult times of 2014 and ask myself how could 2015 not possibly be a better year? After our day together it occurred to me how selfish or blind I was being. Truth is in 2014 I witnessed a miracle. A Bone marrow donor, the countless Doctors and nurses, the literally thousands of people praying and supporting not just Abby but her Daddy too! So many people are waiting for the same miracle to come to them. So many more waited and the miracle never came. I had no idea what God had planned for Abby when she was diagnosed with cancer and I have no idea what he has planned for her now. All I know is every morning when I get up I will be thanking God for the gift of one more day of seeing his plan unfold in my little girls life! Sorry, my BIG girl! Thanks for your prayers and support and coming with us on this journey!
