Happy New Year Fellow Pilgrims! May this truly be The Year of The Lord, and may we see Him reign in peace and power throughout the earth! How can one not love the raw energy and boundless hope of a new year? We get rebooted. Behold, He has made all things new! Whats done is done and whats past is past; we can move on-- press on-- to our high and nobel calling as Children of God, to be this year what weve been chosen specifically and uniquely to be all of our born-again lives: The authentic, pure, and practicing incarnation of the love of Jesus in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, one oppressed by relentless despair and broken relationships. Its our time to shine! Its our day in the sun! We are empowered by God to make a difference. Get started today; catch the Spirits breeze, and ride the fearless wind of hope. Get fired up in the BE! Then, soon, go DO! Oops, I started preaching. Sorry, I dont want to distract you from praying... Cuz its working! Im now improving and healing every hour while lounging at the Resort. Ive made significant progress on my significant disabilities today. Im better. No doubt. No fear. No going back. Twelve days ago I had an episode. Today I have an adventure. Details remain sketchy. Dr told us today that every day removed from the episode makes it more likely we will never know what provoked the episode or what exactly went boom that second my neck exploded. Todays Neurologist, another really bright and personable Christian, said for practical purposes we are calling the episode a cervical infarction (stroke), as improbable as that is, because no other description works better. Odds are one out of four fall over dead when the bomb detonates. Another one out of four never twitch a muscle below their necks again. Another one remains paralyzed on one side or some of both sides. The last one out of four can experience most anything. This is apparently my new normal, characterized distinctly by gross abnormalities, such as improving at a pace that makes it for all intents and purposes impossible to be a cervical stroke. Hard to figure. God has to be in the equation somewhere, or so say the medicine men. Im glad theyve joined the concert. On Day Two up at the Main Lodge, my whole left side was paralyzed. Then my foot moved. Then my leg. At the start of Day Three my big finger twitched. Then the other digits. And like dominos other parts have fallen in line. Tonight I walked 500 feet with a 1960s 4 prong cane thing-a-ma-jig. My leg has returned from the dark side. My grip is strong. My triceps push. My biceps, though, remain silent. My shoulder is weak, but its grit germinated. My neck, well, its sore. So is the back of my wounded arm where the lightening bolt exited without leaving a scratch. How does this stuff happen? Not to bore you with more details, but the weirdest leg of this trip is my nonparalyzed right side, which is totally desensitized. I cant feel hot or cold. I cant feel needles or fire ant bites. Im 50% pain free! Dr doubts this is going to change much, though its possible, I understand, the whole rewiring project could be reversed if I stick my tongue in a refrigerator light socket or swallow my iPhone cord. Hey, stranger things have happened! Im still slopping greedily at the steroid trough, so reality remains tenuous and in some manner synthetic. Doctors believe the reducing of inflammation is my route to healing... Coupled with prayer, I concur. And exercise and therapy and more of the same grace. Every day in bed flat on your back generally requires three days of intense therapy to recover. I could be here in the chambers for a while, but Im anticipating an honorable discharge next week. If not, then Ill probably need your help in executing a jail break. Im well enough to be homesick. My wonderful wife comes everyday, and we make a home out of Suite 312. She smiles through the pain. Scaled: A+ Human! Cosmo gets to come visit Saturday. I miss that crazy beast. To all my sweet brethren at GracePlace: Ya know I love ya! Keep the beat! To my dear longtime friends around the city and around the country: I think Im going to survive another episode, God willing. Thanks for always being there. Friendship is the salsa of life. Be ye all encouraged! Philippians 1:19.
