Happy New Year Lions and Lioness’. With a new year upon us and many cycling miles ahead, please take the time to read, understand, and implement the following on every ride. Knowing these rules will assist all riders in understanding what others in our club are doing: 1. Always check your bike before you ride it to ensure it is safe for you and the others around you; 2. When riding solo, your rear light should be flashing. When riding in a bunch, it should be solid; 3. Ensure you carry 1 or 2 Spare Tubes, a Pump or Co2 Canister(s), Tyre Levers, A Tyre Boot for extreme tyre cuts, and a Multi Tool; 4. Always ride within your limits; 5. If you are new to a group, introduce yourself and let your ability be known; 6. Only ever ride2 abreast in a single lane; 7. Concentrate and be Predictable; 8. Keep a safe distance from the wheel in front of you. Generally 30cm is sufficient; 9. Keep your hands on the hoods or the drops and near the brakes unless you are on the front; 10. DO NOT ride easy on the bars, away from the brakes whilst in the middle of a group; 11. Keep your vision UP and FORWARD; 12. DO NOT look at the rider next to you whilst riding and talking; 13. Call or point out any adverse road conditions; 14. Endeavor to ride handle bar to handle bar or shoulder to shoulder with the rider next to you; 15. Slow and/or brake smoothly and efficiently; 16. If on the front and when taking off from lights, smoothly bring your speed up to 25-28km/h and hold for 30 secs. This allows the rest of the bunch to clip in and keep together, not race to catch the bunch and then have to brake; 17. If you get to the front and do not know the way, roll off immediately; 18. Similarly, If you get to the front and are tired, roll off immediately; 19. If you feel the group is too fast, try to advise the ride captain. He or she will determine what happens next. The ride captain should be the rear rider and will know if anyone has a problem. 20. Lastly, enjoy the ride!
