Happy New Year to those who celebrate today*! Another solstice - TopicsExpress

Happy New Year to those who celebrate today*! Another solstice passed .. what can we do in our vegan Organic growing calendar in the next few weeks? In England, a winter cold snap is just over, bringing back mild weather. I am continuing to gather and apply mulch materials: heavy plain cardboard (weighted with river stones, tree stumps and bricks) to clear ground for sowing; coffee grounds and tea leaves around over-wintering herbaceous plants; chipped wood for paths. If I find any chipped branch wood, Ill experiment with applying it alongside green manures. My trial of over-wintering hardy (Aquadulce) broad beans (Vica fabia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicia_faba) is going well. My trial of over-wintering Carlin peas (Cajanus cajan en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigeon_pea) in home-made bottle cloches also looks promising - the plants are about 18 in tall, a few inches out of the bottle necks; the growth inside the cloches looks healthy, the tips outside have been knocked back a bit by the frost. My Babingtons leeks (Allium ampeloprasum babingtonii pfaf.org/user/Plant.aspx?LatinName=Allium+ampeloprasum+babingtonii) look fine, although they are growing very slowly. * In the Gregorian calendar, New Years Day is celebrated variously on 23 Sep 2014, 24 Oct 2014, 25 Oct 2014, 7 Nov 2014, 1 Jan 2015, 5 Jan 2015, 19 Feb 2015, 21 Mar 2015, 4 Apr 2015, 14 Apr 2015 and other days!
