Happy Onam to one and all... Onam, the most celebrated festival in Kerela symbolizes the welcome of their beloved kind Mahabali... During his reign, the state witnessed its golden era - there was peace, harmony and prosperity... One day, Lord Vishnu (in his Vamana- little blue faced dwarf avatar) approached the generous king and asked him for land equivalent to three steps of land.. Just as King Mahabali agreed to this strange request, Vamana began to expand and increased himself to the size of cosmic proportions.. With his first step the Brahmin boy covered the whole of earth and with the other step he covered the whole of the skies. He then asked King Mahabali where is the space for him to keep his third foot. The King realised that he was no ordinary Brahmin and his third step will destroy the earth. Mahabali with folded hands bowed before Vamana and asked him to place his last step on his head so that he could keep the promise. The Brahmin placed his foot on the head of the King, which pushed him to patala, the nether world. Pleased with the virtuous king, Lord Vishnu appeared in his true self and granted the king a boon... Mahabali was extremely attached with his people and kingdom and requested to be allowed to visit them once a year - Onam marks this yearly visit of the great King Mahabali and is celebrated with various rituals and customs, the highlight being the snake boat race and onakalikal Sadya, the grand feast and the floral carpet are also prepared to welcome King Mahabali.. On Onam, we wish that peace and prosperity are always nurtured around us, and all over the world~~ Hridayam niranja onashamsakal....
