Happy Pi Day and Einsteins Birthday! For those of you who arent quite as nerdy and dont pay attention to the more esoteric landmarks in life, let me explain. The constant pi is the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter - divide the distance around any circle to the distance across it, and you get the same number - always, for any circle. Its one of those wonderful, almost mysterious numbers, like The Golden Mean (which is even more awesome). An approximate value of pi is 3.14159265, but the digits go on forever, because it is an irrational number. That seems such a deprecating name for something that has been a constant for us, and figures into so much of life, literally. So the connection to today- the date is 3/14. At the 15th hour (3pm) and 9.265 seconds, we will optimize the fit for pi, for this year. Next year will be the best fit for 100 years, because it will be 3/14/15 9:26.5 . So eat some pie today (I made two pear pies for the occasion to take to work) and kiss a nerd at 3:09. Oh, and in honor of Einstein, ponder a Special Relative.
