Happy Religious Freedom Day. Today we commemorate the passage on January 16, 1786, of a document authored by Thomas Jefferson: the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, which was the foundation for the First Amendment. Remember, religious freedom is our first and most fundamental freedom. It was central to our nations founding. Every generation has to work to preserve it for the next one. And government can be a corrosive force to religious freedom unless citizens remain watchful and hold elected officials -- and unelected bureaucrats -- accountable. Charities, teachers, private business owners -- all Americans -- should be able to exercise their religious freedom. Americans should never be penalized for honoring their religious convictions.
