Happy Sept. 1! A huge thank you to Colleen, Ruby and Lisa Purdy who signed up for up-front memberships in August - DeCO will be donating to our August charity, Prayers for Alaina on their behalf! This months charity is CASA. Our own member Mike La Torre is a volunteer for the organization. Remember, for every up-front 6-month or one-year memberships purchased, a portion will be donated to this months charity. From Mike: CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, and a CASA volunteer functions as kind of a champion for an abused or neglected child. Oftentimes courts, lawyers and social workers are overloaded with cases, and there are unfortunately not enough hours in the day for them to get to know the children well enough to advocate effectively on their behalf. The state has a wealth of different options to help children at its disposal, but every child and every situation is different. Some treatment might be perfect for one child, while completely wrong for another. As a CASA volunteer, its your job to meet with the judge, the assigned attorney, case workers, teachers, the parents and the child (or children) to understand the case and the childs needs and continuously work with the child to make sure that everyone follows through on what theyre supposed to be doing (anger management or drug treatment plans for the parent, etc.) That includes being a voice in court on the childs behalf. CASA is unique in that has been added to law, so CASA volunteers can utilize court orders to ensure compliance.
