Happy Tails Update: We recently received this update from KyLee about J.R., a former BCSP stray left behind as a puppy on a remote farm: Hi Marilyn! I write with wonderful news.. J.R. is heart worm free! We had a little scare at the vet about a month ago where the test came back positive, but after our visit today hes a very healthy and happy boy! Also, he is officially a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs, Inc. and has volunteered at the hospital nearby to get his certification. After this Saturdays orientation we will be able to go to the hospital to cheer up patients whenever we like. Im looking into us volunteering at a local elementary school, nursing home, and library as well. I hope all is well in Zalma. I wish I could pay you a visit and look for another dog but know I should probably hold off. I included pictures of J.R. so you could see how happy he is in his new forever home. (Sorry about the crappy quality, still dont own a camera.) He loves it here in Iowa. KyLee Thanks for the update KyLee! It makes our heart smile to know J.R. is living such a great life! Heres the story of J.R., the puppy left behind and his partner, Eugene: =================================================== The parents did not get along. Divorce was the result. The fractured family drove away with their household possessions packed in vehicles, leaving their faithful yellow puppy and loyal Australian Shepherd behind on their remote farm, never returning to pick them up. Until that day, on school mornings, the dogs had walked with their children down the driveway to meet the school bus and returned in the afternoon to usher them home. A neighbor, who owned hunting land across the road, had seen this routine, admiring their loyalty and good manners. When the family failed to come back and the dogs showed signs of hunger, the neighbor would become their caretaker, bringing enough food to last until his next visit. The dogs would drink their water from a creek near the house. Meanwhile, as the seasons changed, they remained loyal, waiting at the end of the driveway. They waited for three years… In August 2013, their day had come. The pup was now a handsome 3 year old Anatolian Shepherd/Lab mix; the Aussie, now about 10 years old, was going blind and was very dependent on his buddy. Together, with the help of their caretaker and another concerned neighbor, they were loaded up into Marilyns truck, to begin their next chapter with the Bollinger County Stray Project. They were taken directly to the vet. Old Eugene was stage 2 heartworm positive. JR was stage 1 heartworm positive. After a discussion with the vets, it was agreed that Eugene’s health was good enough to save him. They were neutered and treated for heartworms while being housed together in Marilyns outdoor kennels. Late October 2013, a college student called wanting to adopt JR. Marilyn wondered what would become of Eugene without JR. Had she made a mistake saving him? She prayed, Please help me find a home for old Eugene.” That same day, a man from Ohio called. He was dog shopping for his best friend, James, who had just lost his 15 year-old Australian Shepherd. He searched Petfinder for “Australian Shepherd anywhere USA”. 210 pages had popped up. Old Eugene was on page 45. This dog needed James as much as James needed him. Eugene and JR were separated for only two days before their leashes were handed to their new owners. Eugene was flown by a volunteer pilot to Ohio where Eugene met his new owner at the airstrip. We could not have imagined a better outcome for J.R. and Eugene. God bless everyone involved in creating this happy tail: • caretaker, Mr. Eugene, who drove 45 minutes (one-way) 3 times a week for 3 years to feed them • concerned neighbor who helped facilitate their intake into BCSP • our many BCSP supporters who donated specifically to Eugene and J.R.s care, reducing their adoption fees thereby making adoption more likely. • their adopters, KyLee and James, who were willing to adopt these awesome heartworm-positive dogs • the pilot, Tim, and co-pilot, Robert, who flew Eugene to his furever home • the Bollinger County Veterinarian Services who helped with their care • Marilyns ever-present willingness to help the strays in Bollinger County • YOU, who cared enough to take the time to read this story!
