Happy Thanksgiving! Days of “thanksgiving” have been celebrated throughout history. During the Revolution, “Thanksgiving Day” was celebrated December. In November 1777, in honor of the victory over the British at Saratoga, Gen. George Washington issued orders setting aside Thursday, December 18 for Solemn Thanksgiving and Praise. Below is the account of how the 3rd NY Regiment at Fort Schuyler/Stanwix celebrated their day: Fort Schuyler 17th Decr, 1777 Tommorrow is the day appointed by Congress to be Observed as a day of publick thanksgiving throughout the United States no duty will therefore be done in this Garrison Tommorrow unless it be to mount the Necessary Guard. The Continental Congress also declared “Thanksgiving Day” a holiday, which was then celebrated in all 13 States. The modern holiday we are familiar with was not established until the 1800s. To learn more about Thanksgivings past and other colonial holidays, visit the fort on Saturday November 29 at the fort from 6:30 to 8:30 pm for the annual Holiday Open House!
