Happy Thursday,its almost Friday, morning to you. We are in Matthew 15 today, and once again we have the Pharisees challenging Jesus. While we dont have Pharisees, so to speak, challenging us now a days, we do have religion and legalism that is the same thing. It is man following man made rules and rituals trying to earn Gods grace and favor and earning their way to heaven. It is also man elevating themselves up and standing in judgment of others. Now before you think the disciples had bad hygiene habits, that is not the case here. What was happening was the disciples were not following an elaborate hand washing ritual before eating their meal. Jesus points out how they break Gods Word with their man-made teachings. Gods Word says honor your Father and your Mother. The Pharisees were teaching that you didnt have to help your Father and Mother because everything you possess is a gift from God, and not a resource to be used to help your parents! Jesus calls them hypocrites. Their outward appearance of righteousness is vain worship. God wants real heart felt worship. Not man made rituals. What defiles a person? Does not washing your hands in a 20 step ritual defile a person when they eat? No way. Its what comes out of the mouth, that really comes from the heart, that defiles a person. The inward being, the heart is what is important. The outward appearance of worship through rituals is nothing to God. Jesus then heals the Canaanite (Gentile) womans daughter and feeds four thousand. I have attached a youtube clip I have used before that sums up Jesus teaching in Matthew 15.
