Happy Thursday night, Yall... When the temperature gets as low As it has been the past few days, I kinda wonder how the old timers made it, With their old fashioned, low-tech ways. In years past, Ive heated with wood, Which I cut myself with a chain saw, Trimmed it up and cut it to length, Just as soon as the tree would fall. I spent money on the saw itself, And the gasoline and oil, Of course gas for the old pickup truck, Not figuring the cost of the toil. Now a pickup load is about a rick, Maybe just a little dab more, And Id load, haul and stack the wood, Usually just outside my door. Then haul it in, an armload at a time, And near the woodstove it would be, Ready to burn when the weather was cold, A hot, cozy fire for all, and me. Oh, the heat that stove cast off, So dry, and warm to the bones, Made me wonder why everyone didnt Use wood to heat their homes! And when, at last, the stove was full, Of ashes of several days, Id shovel them out into an ashcan, Haul them out, and throw em away. When my woodpile ran low, of course, Id have to start the process all over, you know, Load up the chainsaw with fuel and oil, And back to the woods Id go. Then a while back, I had to move, Back to town where theres no use for wood, But natural gas in a furnace for heat, Rather be in the country if I could. But I guess I hadnt orta gripe, too much, With the citys little ways and tricks, Now instead of all of that work, I simply give the thermostat a Click! Chester M. Baldwin, January 08, 2015.
