Happy Tuesday! Our next Employee Spotlight feature is Jeff Ruth! Q: What do you do here at SGF? A: I take care of the grounds out front of the terminal. In wintertime I run snow removal equipment when needed. I get involved in a variety of projects as well. Sometimes I do mechanic work on ground equipment, vehicles the airport owns. The airport owns and operates it’s own tractors, trucks, mowers, and also it’s own snow equipment. We have 4 Oshkosh snow plow trucks, 2 snow blowers, and wheel loaders for snow removal. Q: How long have you been with SGF? A: I started March 1st in 1989 with Transworld Express Airlines and then worked for Northwest Airlines. I did customer service for 20 years with these airlines. I’ve been with the city for 5 years doing grounds maintenance. Q: What’s the best part about your job? A: I get to do a variety of things. Sometimes I help other departments when they need extra help with projects.. I really like it all. Q: What’s the most memorable moment you can think of? A: When I was doing customer service for the airlines, I really enjoyed interacting with the customers and helping them, but the most memorable moment would probably be the morning of 9-11. We’d sent out our morning flights and then the news broadcasted the airplanes going into the world trade center. It was just such a different feeling in the airport, because everything came to a standstill. It lasted for several days, and we were uncertain what was going to happen next. Every flight was grounded and stopped. No flights came in or out. There were several days where there was just absolutely nothing. Q: What do you like to do with your free time away from the airport? A: I really enjoy my hobbies of collecting tractors and steam engines and running steam trains. I am the show director of the Ozarks Steam Engine Association, I do the advertising for the Ozarks Steam Engine Association, PSAs. I’m on the board of directors for the Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association. I’m the vice president of the Heart of the Ozarks Model T Car Club. I’m a member of the Railroad Historical Museum at Grant Beach Park. I also enjoy operating Steam Trains which I do at a show in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Q: Any advice for the general public? A: Before traveling, please check with your airlines. Go online and check what their guidelines are for checking luggage and what you’re allowed to carry on, so that you know what to expect before you get to the airport. Also check TSA guidelines as to what you’re allowed to bring in your carry-ons.
