Happy Veterans Day to all who have served. We honor all our veterans and thank them for their sacrifices for serving this great country. We have many veterans at the Edmond Historical Society & Museum, most of them are volunteers--again, answering the call to serve their community. These two photos are Edmond veterans: The first photo is our long-time volunteer, Quimby C. Enterline. He was promoted to Buck Sergeant while serving in Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Reg, 3rd Inf. Div, Rome, Italy while on a pass in July 1944. Quimby was recognized recently on Pay It Forward for his service to the Museum, continuing his service to his community. Russell Dougherty was the first Edmond High School graduate to die in World War II on April 19, 1943. He was a pilot in the 307th Bombardment Group called the “Long Rangers” and was a Second Lieutenant stationed at Guadalcanal and was awarded an Air Medal with three Oak Clusters for missions there. On April 19, 1943 Dougherty and his crew took off on a mission when something went wrong with the plane and it crashed. After Russell Dougherty’s death he was awarded a Purple Heart. His son Russell Chris Dougherty was born June 28, 1943 two months after his death. Russell Dougherty Elementary School was named to honor him in 1947. In 2009 a statue of him was placed in front of the school. These are just two of the many veterans in this community. We thank all who have served and those who continue to serve our country.
