Happy Wednesday! Today I will talk about Bone Graft surgery. For my bone graft, the doctor used a new treatment called BMP. It stands for Bone Morphogenetic Protein. Here is something I copied to explain it better than I can: Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) stimulate bone growth naturally in the human body. These proteins that exist in the body can be produced, concentrated and placed in the area of the spine for a spinal fusion to take place. More importantly, they can create a fusion without the need for any use of the patient’s own bone. Soooooo, they were used in spinal surgeries and someone noticed they could be used to help bone growth in cleft repairs, too! How cool! What that means is, I didnt have to heal in two places. Only in one. The recovery was still hard but not nearly as hard as having to recover in two places. Some doctors use it and some dont and thats okay. This is just the way mine did it and it worked. My own bone grew in its place. Science is amazing. I love Science. What about your story? xoxo Andi
