Happy Wednesday all! The sun has come out, and with it, our Wednesday Round Up, a brief synopsis of whats going on in the theater world this week, both in NY and around the country/globe! Did we miss anything important? Let us know below! **Broadway** Two plays opened this week: “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” at the Barrymore Theatre and “It’s Only a Play” at the Schoenfeld Theatre. Broadway theaters dimmed their lights in memoriam of Marian Seldes last Wednesday. Seldes, 86, was a 5-time Tony nominee, winning for “A Delicate Balance” in 1967 and earning a Tony for lifetime achievement in 2010. Also a beloved acting teacher at Julliard, Seldes’s students included Robin Williams, Patti LuPone and Kevin Spacey. Seldes was inducted in the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1995. Michael C. Hall (known mostly for TV’s Dexter, Six Feet Under) will take over for Andrew Rannells as the titular character in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” at the Belasco Theatre tomorrow night. This is Hall’s second Broadway performance this year, following his role in the drama “The Realistic Joneses”. The last musical role for Hall was the Emcee in Roundabout’s previous revival of Chicago 15 years ago. “If/Then” won AEA’s “Extraordinary Excellence in Diversity on Broadway” Award for the 2013-14 season. Said Christine Toy Johnson of AEA, “We are truly honored to acknowledge If/Then’s extraordinary excellence in diversity…The artistic choice to capture the contemporary world of New York City with a cast portrayal inclusive of various ethnicities and the LGBT community provides audiences with a more authentic view than is typically seen on the Broadway stage. If/Then is our city. Past recipients of the award are 110 in the Shade and Les Misérables (2006-07), Billy Elliot (2008-09), and American Idiot (2009-10). **Off-Broadway** The new musical “Found” (Atlantic Theatre Company), which opened on Tuesday night, is a hit with audiences and critics. The show is based on the true story of Davy Rothbart, who, while struggling through a low point in life, discovered an angry note attached to his cars windshield wiper that was meant for somebody else. This brief glimpse into a strangers life made him wonder about other scraps of paper he might find lying around. His collection of letters, notes, lists, reminders, flyers and other scribblings started amounting into the hundreds, and in June of 2001, the first issue of his indie magazine Found was published. Lyricist Richard Maltby, Jr. is stepping into the role of the Toy Manufacturer in York Theatre Co.’s current production of “Big”, the musical he co-wrote with David Shire (music) and John Weidman (book). He will continue in the role for the rest of the run (through October 19th). This is the first NYC revival of Big since its short Broadway run in 1996, garnering it 5 Tony nominations. Suzan Lori-Parks’ new play, “Father Comes Home from the Wars”, opened at the Public Theatre last night. The play is a trilogy of pieces presented in one sitting. In Part 1, A Measure of the Man, Hero, a slave who is accustomed to his master’s lies, must now decide whether to join him on the Confederate battlefield in exchange for a promise of freedom. Part 2, The Battle in the Wilderness follows Hero and the Colonel as they lead a captured Union solider toward the Confederate lines as the cannons approach. Finally, in Part 3, The Union of My Confederate Parts, the loved ones Hero left behind question whether to escape or wait for his return - only to discover that for Hero, freedom may have come at a great spiritual cost. Parks won the Pulitzer Prize for her play “Topdog/Underdog”. She also penned the new adaptation for the Tony-winning revival of “Porgy and Bess”. **Regional/International** The Jeff Awards were presented Monday night, honoring Chicagos theatrical work in both Equity and non-Equity spheres. Big winners were “The Dance of Death” at Writers Theater (Best Production of a Play (Large), Best Actor and Best Actress in a Play), TimeLine Theatre Co.’s “The Normal Heart” (Best Production of a Play (Midsize), Best Director of a Play), and a revival of “Brigadoon” at the Goodman (Best Production of a Musical (Large), Best Choreography, Best Costume Design). Also out of Chicago, Steppenwolf is premiering a new stage adaptation of “Animal Farm” today as part of their young audience programming, exploring the season theme Create a Movement: The Art of Revolution. #kt #kidztheater #wednesdayroundup
