Happy birthday, Carlos Wesley Don Byas 21 October 1912 - 24 August 1972. A true giant of jazz, he started on clarinet with Bennie Moten when he was 17. In the 30s he moved to Los Angeles and picked up the tenor sax, playing with Lionel Hampton’s band at the Paradise Club among others including Buck Clayton, Don Redman, Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk, and Count Basie. He was also one of the early proponents of Bebop. Don spent the last 26 years of his life in Europe, where the jazz musicians were more appreciated than at home.
