Happy birthday Doris Dorie Miller-10/12/1919-11/25/1944 Dorie was a Navy cook who took control of a machine gun on board the USS West Virginia on December 7, 1941, after tending to his mortally wounded Commander. He grew up in Texas and worked on his family farm and was a fullback on his football team. He joined the US Navy to make money but due to the rigid (and grossly unfair) segregation policies at the time, he was not allowed to be trained. He was officially credited with downing two Japanese zeros and was awarded the Navy Cross by Admiral Chester Nimitz. He was lost at sea after a Japanese submarine torpedoed the USS Liscome Bay (CVE 56). His body was never recovered. On June 30, 1973, the USS Doris Miller-Knox Class Frigate (FF-1091) was christened in his honor.
