Happy birthday, John Haley Zoot Sims 29 October 1925 - 23 March 1985. An early influence was Ben Webster, and in 1944 he replaced Ben in Big Sid Catletts quartet. Zoot came from a performing family, playing drums, clarinet and dancing. His parents were vaudeville performers so he was raised to perform! He dropped out of high school after one year to turn pro, joining Benny Goodman in 1943. He had an exciting career, having played with many greats over the years, like Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan, and teaming with Al Cohn for several years.
