Happy birthday Stan Lee! Stan Lee is best known for creating the Marvel Universe of comic books in 1961. At age 19 in 1941, Lee became the editor-in-chief for Timely/Marvel Comics, a position that he maintained until 1972 when he became publisher. In collaboration with several artists, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, Lee co-created Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, the X-Men, Daredevil, Hawkeye, the Silver Surfer, the Black Widow, the Black Panther, the Falcon, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. Lee stopped writing comic books in 1972 to become the publisher of Marvel Comics.
