Happy birthday to my Grandmama, she would be 84 today. This poem reminds me of our relationship. I have so many memories of her rocking me back and forth, wiping tears from my eyes, puke from my hair, and lovingly comforting me from a bad dream. This part of the poem reminds me of her last year of life and especially those last few days, when I was blessed to return even part of the unconditional love she so freely gave to me. I had the privilege to stay with her, rock back and forth and wipe tears from her eyes, brush her hair, read a book to her and comfort her. Well, that mother, she got older. She got older and older and older. One day she called up her son and said, Youd better come see me because Im very old and sick. So her son came to see her. When he came in the door she tried to sing the song. She sang: Ill love you forever, Ill like you for always... But she couldnt finish because she was too old and sick. The son went to his mother. He picked her up and rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And he sang this song: Ill love you forever, Ill like you for always, As long as Im living my Mommy youll be. Ill love you forever, Ill like you for always, As long as Im living my Grandmama youll be.
