Happy birthday to the unhappy Walter Miller. I know of two mass murdering bombers who repented in World War Ii. One was Howard Zinn, who may have justified his existence to himself, but was probability tormented by his conscience to the end. The other was Walter Miller. Both were ordered to bomb cathedrals without being told the nature of their targets. In Millers case, the result was a conversion from soft apathetic atheism to a full blown case of the RCC. He wrote a couple of dozen excellent short stories, including Darfsteller, in which a John Henry actor battles robot actors over interpretation. Then he wrote A Canticle for Liebowitz, about the only work of Christian sf I know of that deserves to sit on the same shelf as CS Lewis. Then he went into psychotic guilt ridden seclusion, finally blowing his brains out. I guess that engaging in the world to make it a better place is psychologically healthier than masturbating ones guilt.
