Happy reading Nsukka (Enugu State) April 19, 2012 (NAN) A member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Ikechukwu Ezeugwu (PDP- Udenu Constituency) said there was need for more interaction between elected leaders and their people. Ezeugwu said this on Thursday in Udenu, Enugu State, during a town hall meeting organised by an NGO, Advocacy Partnership for Good Governance (APAGG), with the theme, “Constituency Outreach.” He said that the meeting would enable people know how best to fast track development in the area. According to him, it will also encourage information between people and their representatives to avoid making wrong conclusions about government programmes and policies. “Town hall meeting provides opportunity to interact and rub minds with your people. “It helps people to know the functions of their representatives. “We gathered here to share information because, when we do not have the right information, we make wrong conclusions. “Functions of legislature is legislation and to monitor implementation of budget by the executive through oversight functions,” he said. He said that lawmakers could also move motions of urgent importance when there was an emergency situation to draw governments attention on such situation before it got out of hand. As representative of the people, there was the need to always come together to interact so as to know the actual needs of the people, he added. “This interaction helps a leader to know which government policy or programme has good or adverse effect on people, ” he said. Ezeugwu said in order to feel the heart beat of the people, he had provided an opinion box in Udenu LG headquarters where people could drop observations and views on how to move the constituency forward. “I will personally hold the key to the box and go through the suggestions,” he said. In a remark, the leader of the NGO, Mr Ben Motanya, said the organisation introduced the town hall meeting in the area to enable people and their representatives to interact. According to him, the organisation will do the same in all the local government areas of the state. “The beauty of democracy is participation and dialogue. The elected leaders will not do it alone without the input of their people. “I commend the people for their impressive turn out, ’ he said. Earlier in a remark, the Chairman of the Udenu LG, Mr Godwin Aboyi, commended the organiser of the meeting and pledged that the council would sponsor subsequent ones. “The meeting will help to fast track development as well as provide people with accurate information about government, he added. NAN reports that the meeting was attended by political party chieftains, traditional rulers, the clergy, town union presidents as well as representatives of civil society groups. (NAN)
