Happy to be home in Philadelphia after returning from Monteverde Costa Rica, after visiting with dear friends and attending Meeting for Worship at the Monteverde Friends Meeting. We stayed with Ran and Nicolette Smith, got a chance to hang out with Maria Abarca and Katy VanDusen and saw so many other folks we love and learn from. A highlight of the trip was a chance to go backpacking in the rainforest with Ran and Benito Guindon, hiking from the Monteverde Reserve, through gorgeous cloud forest to the Arenal Volcano. Words cant say how beautifully and really, really challenging that hike was, and the respect that Ran and I had for the awesome fortitude of our more experienced friend, Benito. All that said, it was a little surreal to be in such a beautiful place while watching and reading about the tragic events in Ferguson, and the slow motion injustice of the School District of Philadelphias budget crisis.
