Happy weekend! Hug your trees! In that Sunderban village in Assam, this little boy is weeping uncontrollably, as he sees thousands of reptiles washed ashore in the flooded river and when water recedes, all reptiles are dying in thousands as there is no shade or tree or plant. He seeks help from govt and public but none is coming. He single handedly plants a few bamboos on the dry sand bed of endless length and breadth and keeps growing them. His philosophy is to plant atleast one tree a day so the dry sandbed can be converted slowly. The challenges are too many as the plants keep dying due to harsh and unhelpful weather and soil conditions but he never gives up. He brings ants, bees, small birds, reptiles, etc. to infuse more nature. Thanks to the trees, rains also keep coming slowly. Today after 35 years, there is a 1360 acres of forest called Molai woods, with all possible trees and plants, all made and nurtured by him. Now there are birds, reptiles, rhinos, tigers, elephants, etc. living there in lush green nature. Familiar? This is the true story of Jadev Payeng, called the Forest Man of India. When I came back to Bangalore after 30 years, I cried shamelessly hugging the small trees I planted in that little street I lived, now they are all big trees. Not sure whether the trees remember me. I need to go to Egypt next to see the trees I planted there in my short life there.
