Happy wintry 3rd day of the flu Elvis 80th Birthday Thursday morning fellow Calgary live music fans. Yep half the people I know seem to have the same bug or similar, so I’m counting on the rest of yas to be representin’ at our favorite local live music venues tonight. Elvis! Elvis! Elvis! Yes it’s what would have been Elvis’s 80th and I can’t think of a better way of celebrating it than with Steve Pineo’s annual Elvis Birthday Bash down at the Ironwood. He’s always tweaking this show to get it just right and this year The Heebee-Jeebees are playing the part of the Jordanaires! It’s been sold out for a month but provided you don’t show up with an entire boy scout troop, Pat and his great staff can often fit ya in, especially on snowy wintry nights ;-) BTW tomorrow night Steve takes the Elvis Birthday Bash lineup to the Sundre Arts Centre, an amazing venue for shows such as this. Should also mention that the Deerfoot Inn & Casino also has an Elvis Tribute Show tonight and Saturday, this one featuring highly-regarded Toronto-based Elvis Impersonator Gino Monopoli. Were I not so freakin’ sick, Mikey’s Juke Joint would be my probable destination to catch Edmonton roots countryman Tom Olsen & The Wreckage, whom I missed a couple of Sundays back at the IW. Heard that one was a barnburner so I’m sure tonight’ show at Mikey’s will be as well. Neil Gunholds Shadow Government is pretty busy these days and tonight you get “two bands worth of rad” as they are playing Wine-Oh’s with Funky Enterprise also on the bill, a “guaranteed good time”. The Oak Tree Tavern’s Trash Twang & Thunder Thursday Night Series tonight gets taken over by local blues treasure Tim Williams, who can lay down a whole lotta twang & thunder believe you me. It’s also Bluestime at Lynwood Station with Don Yuzwak’s Blueswak tearng it up. While down at the Blues Can it’s funk time with URBANdivide Presenting D&A Electrofunk organ trio. Come early for happy hour and catch some funk boogie woogie style with Canada’s reigning boogie woogie piano queen and CBMA award winner Deb Power pounding out the ivories. If its jazz you crave, then the Hotel Blackfoot is the obvious choice with Johanna Sillanpaa & Brian Sharon ready to satisfy your jones. It’s the first Raw Bar Rotation Series show of 2015 at the Hotel Arts and for this one Amy Thiessen’s musical guest is Red Deer’s Randi (with an I) Boulton 7-10. Buddy Rob Lagace’s Original Music Showcase is also cranking it up for the first time this year with musical guest Mitch Belot down at Original Joe’s Stephen Avenue 6-9. Allen Barrett plays Fionn McCools in Eau Claire and Tony Dizon is at the Riverbend Pub. Wanna rock hard metal go with the King Dude, Chieftan, Witchstone triple bill at Broken City or the Blackest Sin, Burning Effigy, Hellborn Death Engines triple bill at Dickens. Project Mayhem begin a three-night stand at Morgan’s. Looking for a Thursday night Jam and there are a number of good ones out there such as Jay Coda Walker’s Living Room Acoustic Jam/Open Mic at the Border Crossing…visit the Calgary Jam Scene Facebook page, the definitive source of Calgary Jam intel. Out of town, up north in Red Deer, Fratters’ Speakeasy Barrelhouse Jazz Concert Series presents Twisted Lobby, a great new local 5-piece jazz fusion band. Out in Banff, Wild Bill’s Legendary Saloon welcomes back their favorite country son, Brent Lee and his band for night two of a four-night stand. Across the street at the Rose and Crown, kitsch rockers Brocade kick off a three-nighter. Play safe and keep it live.
