#HappyCampComplex Evening Update August 23, 2014 Video: Members of the leadership team from the Happy Camp Complex give an update this evening on the fires. Date Started: August 11, 2014 Size: 18,483 acres total Containment: 15 percent Estimated Containment Date: 9/8/14 Estimated Cost to Date: $13.8M Total Personnel: 1,888 Committed Resources: 44 crews, 8 helicopters, 98 engines, 16 dozers, 23 water tenders Community Meeting: There will be a community meeting tomorrow, August24, at 6:00 p.m. at the Seiad Valley Fire Department (44601 Highway 96). Current Events: The Frying Pan Fire is 16,522 acres. The fire has not crossed over Grider Ridge. Today’s northeast winds provided clear skies over the ridge for the first time in several days. This gave firefighters an opportunity to conduct retardant drops and keep the fire on the west side of Grider Ridge. Helicopters were also busy today, dropping 100,000 gallons of water on the Frying Pan Fire and spot fires to the southeast of the Faulkstein Fire. On the southwest side of the Frying Pan Fire, low-intensity fire backed slowly downhill toward Elk Creek, and in some places it is now within 1/8 mile from the creek. Crews have secured structures along the Elk Creek Road. Fire crews began strategic burning operations on the south side of the fire. They started on the ridge on the north edge of the 2002 Stanza Fire footprint, and burned slowly toward Elk Creek. This is expected to help halt the southward progression of the main fire. The Faulkstein Fire is 1,626 acres. Helicopters dropped water on the spot fires on the southeast side of the fire to keep the spots in check until fire crews access the fire from a trail system to the east. Structure protection crews continued removing brush around homes today along the Scott River Road. Fire Behavior: The fires will rest tonight but should continue to burn slowly into the early morning hours. Firefighters working the night shift have an important role in helping hold the fire. Weather Conditions: Today’s north and northeast winds will continue through the evening and weaken in the early morning hours. Winds will remain light tomorrow. Humidity levels will not recover significantly tonight. The next several days will be warm and dry with no chance of lightning. Safety: Air quality along the Klamath River drainage is affected by smoke from the Frying Pan and Faulkstein Fires. For more information about air quality in the area, please visit californiasmokeinfo.blogspot/ Firefighters and their vehicles are present along Highway 96. Motorists should slow down and limit distractions to help keep everyone safe when driving through the area. A Clean Air Respite Center is available at the Karuk Tribe Senior Nutrition Center in Happy Camp (64101 Second Avenue). The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and will remain open longer if needed due to smoky conditions. An Evacuation Advisory continues for residents of Happy Camp along China Grade Road from Elk Creek Bridge to Frying Pan Creek issued August 13, 2014. China Grade Road is open to residents only.
