Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir to release CD on Afzal hanging: After parallel event to counter Zubin Mehta’s classical musical concert, Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir—reality of Kashmir—is all set to infuse cultural resistance into the ‘Kashmir struggle’ in the form of a CD comprising songs of resilience, laments and mourning against the secret hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru. The CD is titled as—“A tribute to Afzal—a Cultural Aesthetic Tribute to the Resilience and Struggle of people of JK.” The cover of disc display pictures of JKLF founder Muhammad Maqbool Bhat, Afzal, his wife Tabassum, son Galib. It also has the two separate photographs of Bhat’s mother and Afzal’s mother amid protests against Afzal’s execution in the backdrop. “We will be releasing the CD on September 21 at 2 pm,” said Khuram Pervez, spokesman of Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir, a joint forum of various Civil Society groups formed to make people aware of real situation in Kashmir. He said though resistance was already present in Kashmiri traditional songs and poems, the CD would help “institutionalize the cultural resistance.” He said the CD comprises of eight songs. “The focus is on how Afzal was hanged. It (CD) is a tribute to Afzal and a message to people in Delhi, who hanged him that Kashmiri people have not forgotten his hanging,” said Khuram. “It is also an attempt to convey the rulers in Delhi that we will not forgive those who hanged Afzal. The songs in CD call for return of mortal remains of Bhat and Guru.” A poet, who has compiled a song said there are “laments, mourning and the protest against the secret execution.” “And yes, there is strong message to the world about sufferings of Kashmiris, their resilience since past two decades,” he said. JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik said poetry and songs have always played a great role in every freedom movement across the globe. “The singers and poets of such movements remained steadfast to their cause, same should happen in Kashmir,” said Malik. Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said, “Art, culture and language are important tools in the modern resistance movements. Majority of youth use social network sites and blogs to convey a message to world community about suppression. I believe the fresh step by the Civil Society is a strong medium to apprise world community about Kashmir’s reality,” he said. “If the CD contains songs against hanging of Afzal, I think it is a good step. My concern is that the message we want to convey should be subtle.” Joining the chorus, Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said they appreciate the steps taken by the Civil society. “It signifies that sentiment is alive and ticking,” he said. “It proves despite New Delhi and State putting lot of efforts sentiment could not be crushed. It is cropping up in new forms.”
