Harbour project strains roads Thursday, November 20, 2014 - 08:00 Road users are complaining over the rapid degeneration of the Rooi-bank road near Walvis Bay, since Chinese construction company China Harbour & Engineering Company (CHEC) commenced some months ago transporting rock and stone from the Erongo Quarry to the port of Walvis Bay for the construction of a container terminal on reclaimed land. Erongo quarry is situated ten kilometres southeast of Walvis Bay and approximately 2,5 kilometres of the Rooibank gravel road is used daily by CHEC’s fleet of trucks causing the road to fall apart. The remainder of the road to Rooi- bank remains in a good condition leading residents of the area to believe that CHEC’s trucks are the main culprits. The Rooibank road from the airport road’s turnoff to the main entrance of Erongo Quarry is in a grave condition with potholes. It is a traffic hazard especially for smaller vehicles. The Rooibank road is used by dozens of vehicles daily by Rooibank residents, NamWater workers, tourists, tour operators and also workers of two more quarries and a pig farm. A request was made by those residents consulted for the Roads Authority to take the matter of the road to CHEC, in order for regular repairs and maintenance to be carried out to mitigate the situation. On the airport road to Walvis Bay there is also a visible degeneration of the tarred road’s shoulder. CHEC needs to haul some 3 million cubic metres of rock and stone from the quarry to the port of Walvis Bay and with the container terminal project’s completion still years into the future there is doubt whether the airport road and the first section of the Rooibank road will survive this onslaught. informante.web.na/harbour-project-strains-roads.15177
