Hard on the heels of the Baftas and Oscars, here is my list of favourites from my Netflix viewing.. Lady Vengeance by Chan Wook Park. A disturbing, beautiful Korean masterpiece. Be warned, he pulls no punches. Winter´s Bone Debra Granik directs Jennifer Lawrence in a pared back, unsentimental dilemma-dram. Moving and enthralling. TransSiberian Not quite Hitchcock but a great vehicle for Ben Kingsley as he chews the scenery on board a train. With strangers. Robot and Frank Touching and warming largely due to Frank Langellas elderly anti hero. Abandon any reason however and enjoy. Ronin Great fun and great performances from De Nero et al in a great ´Whats in the bag?´ heist. Directed with surety by John Frankenheimer. Hidden This is more Hitchcock than he himself was towards the end. With Godard and Truffaut thrown in. A real treat for fans of French Paranoia. Blitz Because I am a devotee of everything Jason Statham. Great cast, throwing everything in, including a woefully missplaced David Morrissey contrasting with a subtle Paddy Considine and terrifying Aiden Gillen. Its not really clear what Statham is doing in this but it works. Somehow. Hummingbird See above. But without the chaos. Primer Occasionally, a low budget film just hits the spot. This one does on more than one watch. Necessary, as this is a time travel puzzler that still has me confounded. But in a very good way. Oh Brother Where Art Thou If you dont feel good after and during this one, then you are Cluny immune and have no soul. Rango Jaw dropping animation with Jonny Depp. Whats not to like? Safety Not Guaranteed Romance and ´Is it, isnt it?´ Sci-fi, feel good stuff. Great Sunday afternoon viewing. And.. of course, Fargo The very best of the Coen Brothers with Frances McDormand and my first encounter with the wonderfully menacing Peter Stormare.
