Hard to believe, but it has been forty four years since Jimi Hendrix gave his final BIG festival concert. It was Sept. 6, 1970 when the second incarnation of the Jimi Hendrix Experience took the stage at the Open Air Love & Peace Festival in Fehmarn, Germany. Hendrix and MK II line up of the Experience, with Billy Cox on Bass and Mitch Mitchell on Drums, were originally scheduled to play on 5 September, but heavy rain and gale-force winds interference delayed their appearance to the next day. Hendrix could have gone home on the 5th but he decided to play a day later at noon, and duly got booed for his troubles by the festival crowd at the start of his show. I went to this festival just a couple of weeks after the Isle of wight and it was to be the very last BIG festival concert that Jimi ever did. He passed away two short weeks afterward at the age of 27 in London. What a tragic loss to the world! It was on this day in 1970, that the Open Air Love and Peace ☮ Festival began with an INCREDIBLE line-up of bands which included: Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, Sly and the Family Stone, Ginger Baker, Peter Green, Taste, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Canned Heat, Cactus, Vanilla Fudge, Procol Harum, Rod Stewart and the Small Faces, The Incredible String Band, Mungo Jerry, Joan Baez, Alexis Korner, Colosseum, Peter Thorup, Greatest Show on Earth, Fat Mattress, Burnin Red Ivanhoe, Cat Mother, Fotheringay, The Soft Machine, Frumpy Kavinkelm and John Mayall at Insel Fehmarn, in Germany, Oh how lucky I was to be able to attend Jimis last two festivals. They will be etched in my memory for as long as I live! Pretty cool poster too…. Alas, the artist remains lost to history! Share the Last Jimi festival poster with a friend!
