Hard to believe its been a decade since the death of John Balance and the end of one of my favorite bands, Coil. Coil is one of only two bands that Ive ever done a 3 hour dj set of nothing but that act (the other is Controlled Bleeding). I have not posted about it very much due to being focused on tonights show but Coil are one of the massive influences on me. I remeber at one of the increadible Brainwaves festivals seeing this video debuted for what was already a classic song for Coil. https://youtube/watch?v=j6_wEJV_eoY The song is about the murder of director Pier Paolo Pasolini who was murdered in the town of Ostia before the release of his film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom which transported the Marquis de Sades sadistic classic of bureaucratic and religious power used to rape torture and murder youth into the town of Salo, Italy during World War II and the control of the Fascists, where such horrors are reported to have taken place. The film by Coils Peter Christopherson, who is as well known for his direction as for his music, takes another contextual leap to focus on the sadism and murder tied to the Cambodian genocide where many child soldiers murdered other children under another oppressive regime. This was filmed by Sleazy while he lived in Thailand. This type of well thought out juxtaposition of art, history and controversy, as well as the beauty is one of the reasons that I love Coil.
