Harpole’s Produce Fire By Melissa Wagoner Melody Harpole of Harpole Produce is keeping a positive outlook and still laughing at life even after suffering the loss of a shed and everything in it on her family’s farm in Silverton. At 6 p.m. on Nov. 19 Harpole was in the shed closest to her parents’ house and found nothing amiss but by 8 p.m., while inside the house, she could hear crackling noises coming from somewhere outside. “I heard big cracking sounds like trees breaking or a fire,” Harpole said. After discovering the sounds were indeed coming from a fire she rushed back inside to warn her parents and to call 911. Returning outside, Harpole used a hose to wet down nearby trees and farm equipment. “There was five cords of wood inside the shed and when it gets going it puts out a lot of heat,” Harpole said. There were no injuries to people or animals in the fire and the fire department arrived quickly. “It was the perfect time to have a fire,” Harpole said. “I was told the fire department was having a meeting so they were all together. They just needed to get their stuff and go.” Although the cause of the fire is still unknown, volunteers from Abiqua Construction will be removing what remains of the building, which was a total loss. The Harpole family welcomes donations from the community of firewood or tools. “Battery chargers, hammers and other shop tools. Most of our farm equipment is older than I am so we need tools to maintain it,” Harpole said.
