Harriet A Schenck (184-1934) was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and married Thomas Bellamy Sandercock in 1867. Thomas was offered a job in 1882 as an engineer in charge of the saw mill at Fort Laramie. In 1886, while employed at the post, he died of pneumonia. Hattie remained at the post and earned a living for herself and seven children by doing laundry. When the fort closed in 1890 and the property was auctioned off to homesteaders, Hattie purchased the Officers’ Quarters “a” building. This house remained on its original site and was occupied by members of the Sandercock family until the property was acquired by the State of Wyoming in 1937. Pictured here is a photo of Hattie. In the other photo she is walking the fort grounds with her brother John Schenck in the early 1930s
