Harris responds to SCASPA’s statement ========================== Written by MiyVue Staff Writer Basseterre, St. Kitts, 29th August, 2014 (MiyVue) – Leader of the People’s Labour Party, PLP, Dr. Timothy Harris on Thursday (28th August 2014), denounced a statement made by the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) concerning the Government borrowing over EC$500 Million, part of which was to cover expenses for the port. The statement also condemned Harris and his colleagues in the opposition coalition called Team Unity, saying that their recent press release about government borrowing on behalf of the authority was mischievous and erroneous. SCASPA also said the opposition was trying to give the impression that government was increasing the national debt by seeking new bank loans in order to finance the recurring operating obligations of SCASPA and other Government institutions. Harris said when one examines the statement made by SCASPA it leads one to wonder if the resolution brought by the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Denzil Douglas, was based on the wishes of SCASPA. “Unless SCASPA is willing to say that the resolution brought to the parliament was a fraud, then SCASPA must shut up. The resolution states clearly that it was intended to allow SCASPA to borrow money to meet its recurrent expenditure,” Harris said. Harris then suggested that if the resolution was “false” then SCASPA should make a statement on such allegations. “And if it is false, it is not something that the opposition should answer to; instead it is the Government that brought it that should be the one to explain why they brought a false resolution to Parliament.” He added that the intention of Team Unity was not to create a ‘political showdown’ on the issue, but rather highlight the fact that the federation could be more indebted because of the move by Government. “The truth is they’re ashamed. Their efforts to hoodwink the public have been exposed. The public can now see that this government is incompetent and it cannot run the affairs of the state,” Harris said. Harris also said that he personally nor other opposition members were aware of the EC$540 Million resolution. “Those resolutions were brought to parliament by stealth because they were not circularized. That was part of the objection we had with the sitting of Parliament.” Harris said that Team Unity would have never supported the resolutions at a time when the government is engaging in “massive squander-mania”. “We will not support the Government putting an additional debt burden on the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and their children,” Harris said.
