Harry Belafonte to be Awarded Honorary Doctorate at Berklee, Thursday, March 6 WHAT: Harry Belafonte, iconic musician, songwriter, and activist, will receive a Berklee honorary doctor of music degree at a concert in his honor, in recognition of his inspiring musical and humanitarian achievements. The Life and Music of Harry Belafonte: A Tribute Concert, will celebrate Mr. Belafontes life and music from Banana Boat Song to We Are the World with performances by Berklee students and faculty, directed by professor Larry Watson. WHERE: Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston, MA. Brown • 8:20 pm – Honorary Doctorate presentation (approximate) • 8:25 pm – Mr. Belafonte gives acceptance remarks (approximate) ADDITIONAL INFO: Past recipients of Berklees honorary doctorate include Duke Ellington (the first, in 1971), Dizzy Gillespie, Steven Tyler, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Juan Luis Guerra, David Bowie, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Bonnie Raitt, George Clinton, and Carole King. Harry Belafonte exposed America to world music and has spent his life challenging and overturning racial barriers across the globe. Belafonte’s RCA album Calypso made him the first artist in industry history to sell over one million LPs. He also won a Tony Award, an Emmy Award as the first black producer in television, and starred in the Golden Globe-winning film Carmen Jones. In the 1980s, disturbed by events unfolding in Africa due to war, drought, and famine, Belafonte set in motion the wheels that led to the USA for Africa project and the historic recording of We Are the World. Belafonte was also a prominent contributor to ending the oppressive apartheid government of South Africa and for the release of friend Nelson Mandela after twenty-seven years of incarceration. He has continued to devote himself globally to civil and human rights issues, focusing in particular on the United States and Africa.
