Harry’s High Noon Terry Love Harry is contemplating what to do on one of his rare days off. As a Police Officer he just hopes that he will get through the day in peace, without being called out. He decides to call an old flame, Janie. Their relationship has been on and off over the preceding ten years he has always loved Janie since he first saw her in high school, but is a bit of a coward in terms of commitment. “Hi Janie how you going fancy lunch somewhere today” Janie seems to hesitate and tells Harry she is a bit busy today but agrees to see him in his local pub at 12.00 midday. Harry is getting ready and he is seeing Janie in his mind. Tall and willowy with long blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. The complete opposite of Harry who is dark, hirsute, thick set and an inch shorter than Janie’s six feet. They are both approaching 30, she is a solicitor and he is a detective senior sergeant. They often meet in their professional capacity and were lovers at University in Brisbane. The latter is a secret between them because of a certain amount of animosity between their families’ one white and one aboriginal. Harry’s colour comes from his father and his good looks come from his white mother. Harry buys himself a cold beer at the pub and settles down in a corner booth. Janie gets there a few minutes’ later gets a glass of water and sits down next to Harry, Now Harry is known to be pretty cool but he can hardly speak as he asks Janie why she is wearing a wedding dress. “I am getting married today” she informs him. Harry is by now beside himself knowing he is about to lose the women he loves. “But you can’t” he retorts “I love you Janie”. At that point the pub is beginning to fill up but Harry is not seeing this, he is still in shock, horrified that he is about to lose Janie forever. He looks up and sees Janie’s mother, father and two brothers and other people he knows. His own family are coming thru the door and some mates from the police station. The pub becomes very quiet as Janie turns to Harry and asks “will you marry me Harry”. The light bulb moment hits Harry as he realises what this is about. He knows this is what he has always wanted and replied “of course Janie” Everybody in the pub was crying or cheering as they embraced and kissed. Harry looked at Janie and could not stop smiling, Janie whispered I was about to ring you anyway Harry. Intuition works in strange ways he thought. The whole party moved up to the balcony where reverend Michael was waiting and that is how Janie got her man. Harry is thinking wow what a day off….
