Harvard Business School graduates help Afghan farmers explore market for saffron in the U.S “Buying saffron directly from Afghan farmers encourages future investment in Afghanistans agricultural and manufacturing infrastructure and gives the farmers over twice as much income as they would receive from opium production. A company launched by a group of Harvard Business School students earlier this year has been sourcing the high quality saffron from farmers in Afghanistan and selling it in the U.S. Rumi Spice, launched earlier this year, seeks to explore markets for high-quality saffron from Afghanistan and help farmers in Afghanistan generate revenue from it. The company, according to U.S. media, has been selling the retail-packaged saffron to Wilson Farms, Savenor’s Market and Allandale Farms and spice blend suppliers in New York. They also sell the product directly through their website. The founders of this company invested a few thousand dollars in this venture and they have already sold more than six kilograms of saffron since January this year. Each kilogram of saffron is purchased from farmers in Afghanistan for 1,700 USD. Rumi Spice is founded by Bines, Kimberly Jung, Kin Yan Chew, Keith Alaniz and Carol Wang, most of whom are military veterans and students at Harvard Business School. Rumi Spice, according to its founders, wants to empower women by helping them become financially independent. “ Almost 8 percent of Afghan harvesters are women. One of our priorities is to empower and promote job opportunities for these women,” says their website. afghanzariza/article/articledetail/harvard-business-school-graduates-help-afghan-farmers-explore-market-for-saffron-in-the-us
