Has anyone looked robustly and comprehensively at the way in which metaphor shapes or inhibits cultural ideas? Many debates could be summed up as a clash of metaphors. Foucaults account of how the notion of the body changed in the carceral system and in the medical system are composed of one constellation of metaphors being replaced by another. Is it possible that the limits of what can be thought in the Foucauldian( really applied Kantian) sense could be in part metaphorical. Particularly what comes to mind is the debate between the blank slate and other accounts of human/social nature. It seems that sometimes metaphors invented for heuristic value can become calcified and become something like dogma except more fundamental than a doctrine itself.
