Hate seeing all the cold weather posts today - sounds like winter has made it to Kincardine :(. Hate to rub it in but Thailand is wonderfully warm, I wish I could send it your way! Survived two 10hr days on a slow boat up the Mekong River to Chiang Kong, Thailand. Much prefer the river over the bumpy roads, the scenery was stellar and the breeze was perfect for naps and catching up on journal writing. Spent a night with a local Khmu village along the way, sleeping on the floor in a traditional stilt house. This aminist practicing (or spirit people) community were very welcoming and the local children kept us well entertained with their desire to practice English and sing some Lao songs. After two long days on the river it was so nice to finally make it back to Thailand for the final leg of my loop. Went to see an interesting White Temple this morning that was a showcase of crazy contemporary Buddhist art (paintings of angry birds with Buddha and George bush and Bin laden painted in a dragons eyes?!) before continuing on to Chaing Mai. Spent this afternoon at an elephant conservation area where we got plenty of wet kisses and finally got to ride the gentle beasts :) Then ventured over to FAE (Friends of the Asian Elephant), and amazing elephant hospital and sanctuary that specializes in providing care and prosthetic limbs to elephants injured by land mines. Shed a few tears, but incredible to see the donation dollars going to such a great cause. Tonight was filled with shopping at the citys famous Night bazarre, banana & Nutella crepes (rotti), and capped it off with beers at the local Muay Thai fights - 4 TkOs out of 9 matches made for a quick end to the night! So much to do in chiang Mai its hard to decide how best to spend your time... Heading out on a 30km cycling tour in the morning to stretch my legs from the endless bus and boat rides - and then its time for some relaxation with a massage from a convict at the local womens prison.
