If I were the owner of the team, and I knew that there was a name of my team — even if it had a storied history — that was offending a sizeable group of people, Id think about changing it, President Obama said in an Associated Press interview on the subject of the Washington Redskins. But if there is anything that should offend everyone, it should be the image of a burning cross that was used by the Ku Klux Klan and other genuine racists as a tool of racial intimidation. Yet liberals from the president on down, including the NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus, have said nothing about the use by Rep. Alan Grayson of that imagery to slander the Tea Party. They contend that the Tea Party is a racist organization, forgetting its opposition to all forms of big government, and focusing instead on its being formed in response to the signature legislation of the first black president — ObamaCare. If you fight for those pulling the wagon rather than those who seek to ride it, if you oppose Obama on anything, you must be racist. In a campaign email sent Monday, Grayson includes the transcript of a recent interview he did on MSNBC, with the Rev. Al Sharpton as host. In the interview, the Orlando, Fla., Democrat equated the Tea Party with the Klan and included a photograph of a burning cross with Klansmen in the background. The cross then becomes the T in the words Tea Party transposed over the picture. Below it is the caption: Now you know what the T stands for. It was MSNBC that in August 2009, as the Tea Party movement was taking off, tried to portray Tea Partyers as a bunch of bitter people clinging to their guns and religion, and fearing people not like them. In a heavily edited video of someone described as a white man packing heat at one protest, reporter Contessa Brewer warned breathlessly that there are questions about whether this has racial overtones ... white people showing up with guns. The unedited footage showed the man, who appeared at a health care rally outside an Obama speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Phoenix, was in fact an African-American.
