Hatshepsuts Temple - 16.09.14 Hatshepsuts temple is her funerary temple. It is quite spectacular, and carved into the base of a mountain. She was, by all reports, a great ruler for 17 years, and oversaw peaceful treaties with surrounding nations, and never saw war during her reign. Her architect, Sin Mut, has his tomb about 100 metres away in the side of the mountain. He was known to have been very caring toward one of Hatshepsuts daughters, and there are statues showing him playing with her and holding her in his lap. One has to wonder about the real relationship here... The temple is built on three levels with dozens of columns featured on the front facade. There were once statues of Hatshepsut in mummified form in front of each of these columns, but only a few remain, mostly intact. The rest were destroyed by her step-son, Thutmose III, who took over her kingdom after marrying one of her daughters, and tried to erase all reference to her. You see, she had told him that she would rule in his name while she gave him a good education. For 17 years, she kept him at school (not quite in prison) to improve his education. Finally, he found out the truth, and was furious, so he tried real hard to eradicate her name from everything and replace it with his own. Sometimes these guys just didnt play nice. This is the only structure we have seen which was deliberately destroyed (or partly anyway) during the life of the owner... for most, the destruction came centuries later.
