Hatton is a big hit Published: 29 January 2014 Some of the Preston boxers who took part in the show Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton wowed the 300 guests at a fight night staged at the Park Hall Hotel, in Chorley, on Friday night. Organised by Preston’s ex-world kickboxing champion Johnney Roye, the event featured 10 amateur fights, including a plethora of talent from Preston. As well as providing each fighter with a pep talk before their respective bouts, Hatton also gave an insightful – and often hilarious – speech about his time at the top of the sport as a welterweight champion. Roye said: “It was an absolutely fantastic night and Ricky was first class. “He stopped longer than he needed to and went in and gave all the boxers a pep talk before their fights. “He also gave a speech which was hilarious and very insightful – he spoke about the downsides of being a boxer. “He actually joked on Twitter before the event that his speech would last longer than his world title bout against Manny Pacquiao!” Competing on the bill were a number of young fighters from JR Gym – they were Keaton Peart, Wesley Harriot, Daniel Stevens, Kyle Fuller, Steven Virk (Jr Gym), Anthony Myles, Daryl Brogan (Jr Gym) and Liam Davidson. Larches and Savick ABC were represented by Stan Houghton. Guests were also treated to a three-course dinner. Roye is hoping to stage another boxing night later in the year and hopes to attract another top name to the show.
