My mother told me why she named me Lightfoot...and I lived up to my name. During my lifetime I learned many things...mainly about myself. My name Lightfoot, according to its shortened meaning in Lakota is Iye Omani Atanse He Walks Silently. I had discovered through family sources that we are Minniconjou Lakota Planters by the water. One ancestors name was Gun Hammer. I have also discovered that our family is very possibly Tsalagi Cherokee. The name McRae can be found in one of the eastern rolls. The Celtic name Kevin means Of comely birth, and a dear friend of mine Morning Song, said that Uwoduhi is close to that meaning. Whats most important to myself is that...I am who I am inside. I watched this video and believe its good to know about who your ancestors were. And I am thankful for this knowledge. I am also very thankful for people who took the risks they did to help bring back the pride of being Native American. When I was a teenager, I stood by my knowledge of the truth. We were in 9th grade history class, and was being taught about Little Big Horn Greasy Grass. I raised my hand to speak, and Mr.Ybarra acknowledged me. I told them the truth about how and why that battle came about. I also spoke about the massacre at Wounded Knee. The kids laughed at me, because they thought what I said was ignorant. Considering what was happening in the news at the time concerning Wounded Knee, South Dakota, our teacher surprised me. He demanded that everyone stop laughing, then looked at the ceiling and said, What he said is really the truth. The kids just looked dumbfounded. After class I thanked him for helping me.
