Haulage boss imprisoned for falsifying tachograph records is ordered to pay back £500,000 A Cumbrian haulage boss imprisoned for falsifying tachograph records, after an investigation uncovered 182 false drivers’ hours logs, has been ordered to pay back £500,000 obtained from his criminal conduct. Last year William Ross was given a custodial sentence of two years for conspiring with drivers and his transport manager at Ross International and related business Ross International Haulage to falsify hundreds of records and hide hundreds of thousands of kilometres of driving. Following a Proceeds of Crime hearing on 18 July, Ross was issued with a confiscation order, which represents the conclusion of a three-year investigation by the DVSA and police. He must pay £4,000 within the next two months or face an additional two months imprisonment. Cumbria police said the balance must be paid as and when he acquires assets and will be considered to remain outstanding indefinitely or until paid off in full. Operational Support Unit Sergeant Graeme Hodgson said: “This is the final stage of a protracted joint investigation with our partners at the DVSA. Hauliers falsify their tachograph data putting other road user’s lives at risk and the appropriate sentences were made some time ago for the individuals involved in this case. “Offending brings financial advantages and therefore it is only right that those making the money are penalised financially and cannot benefit from their actions having served their sentence.” Last year, Carlisle Crown Court heard how Ross and manager Robert Robertson created an atmosphere of intimidation and bullying at their businesses and drivers were told to break the rules to keep their jobs. Robertson was given an 18-month jail sentence and drivers were sentenced to up to eight months.
