Haunted Alabama: University of Montevallo, Montevallo The University of Montevallo dates back to 1896 and has had ghost stories circulating about it since its creation. Reports tell of a spooky tunnel that runs under this entire campus once used during the Civil War, now used as a steam chassis. The Reynolds theater department was said to be used as a Civil War hospital, and rumor has it that one of the rooms was stacked with bodies of those who could not be saved. There are many spirits said to haunt the University. The most well known is said to be that of Henry Clay Reynolds, a captain during the Civil War. He is often seen at different spots on the campus grounds, but always outside. The second entity on campus is said to be that of Condie Cunningham, a girl who lived in the Old Residence Hall in 1908 (when the school was called the Alabama Girls Industrial School). One story relates that Condie burned to death in her bed one night, while another tale relates that she burned to death while trying to cook fudge over a Bunsen burner. Her image is said to be mysteriously burned into her door no matter how many times they replace it. It is also said she can be seen roaming the fourth floor halls wearing a burning nightgown. Students who stay there have heard female screams, cries for help, and the sounds of footsteps running down the hallway. A third ghost is said to haunt the historic King House. The spirit is though to be Edmund King (a past resident of the house) and is often seen peering from windows there - presumably guarding a treasure that was rumored to be buried in the area. Some say they feel unexplained chills and have seen a book drop to the floor opened to a page detailing the haunting of the school.
