On March 13, 1881 (OS March 1), Emperor Alexander IIs carriage passed along the Griboedov Canal, when a grenade was thrown by a terrorist towards the carriage. Construction began in 1883 under Emperor Alexander III, as a memorial to his father. An elaborate shrine was constructed at the end of the church opposite the altar, on the exact place of Emperor Alexander IIs death. Work progressed slowly and was finally completed during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II in 1907. The consecration took place on 19 August 1907 in the presence of the Imperial family.
