Have been having a bit of a faff with my RD500 since I restored it. The battery would drain flat after a 30 mile trip with the lights on and wouldnt read more than 12 volts when running. Fitted new battery, loom, had stator rewound, new reg/rect, all done during the resto. Have been pulling my hair out. Cleaned up the powder coated frame so that the earths were metal to metal and still no joy. Tried 3 reg/rects and 5 stators off a friend. Still no joy. Decided to check workshop manual one more time and checked where the loom should be earthed (it has two earthing leads, one under the battery and one on the left hand side of the bike). When rebuilding the bike, I had bolted it to the frame behind the coil bracket on the right. Turns out, it should have been bolted onto the reg/rect on the left (black wire). Lo and behold an abundance of volts! Sometimes you can overlook the easy stuff!
